About University of Texas at El Paso
Public research university in El Paso, Texas. Strong engineering, business, and liberal arts.
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a public research university founded in 1914 and part of the University of Texas System. With over 26,000 students, it holds the distinction of being the largest R1 doctoral research university in the United States with a majority Hispanic enrollment, approximately 85% of students identify as Hispanic. UTEP is classified as a Very High Research Activity institution by Carnegie and generates around $162 million in annual research expenditures.
UTEP offers more than 169 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs across colleges covering engineering, business, education, health sciences, liberal arts, and science. The university has particular strengths in engineering disciplines, including a $20 million reinvestment in its mining engineering program announced in 2024 and a new Advanced Manufacturing and Aerospace Center opened in 2025 housing a new aerospace engineering degree. Its Pan American Center for Earth and Environmental Studies (PACES) has longstanding ties with NASA for geoscience research.
The campus sits at the western tip of Texas on the US–Mexico border, where El Paso meets Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, and New Mexico. Its architecture is uniquely modeled on Bhutanese dzong fortresses, nearly all 97 campus buildings feature sloping walls and overhanging roofs characteristic of Bhutanese design, making it visually unlike any other American university campus. UTEP is an open-access institution with a near-100% acceptance rate, and 50% of its students are first-generation college-goers.

For Nepali students
- UTEP's Bhutanese-inspired architecture holds a genuine cultural resonance for students from Nepal and the broader Himalayan region, the campus design was inspired by photographs of Bhutanese fortresses that reminded early founders of the Franklin Mountains, and Bhutanese students have attended UTEP with ongoing art and cultural exchanges, creating a rare visual and cultural familiarity for South Asian arrivals.
- As an open-access R1 university, UTEP accepts virtually all applicants who meet basic requirements, making it accessible for Nepali students who may not have the grades for more selective US institutions, while still offering research opportunities typical of doctoral universities including graduate assistantships and NSF fellowship recipients.
- International undergraduate students pay approximately $21,000–$25,500 per year in tuition and fees, placing UTEP in the lower-cost tier among US research universities; combined with El Paso's relatively affordable cost of living, total annual costs are significantly below comparable universities in coastal states.
- US F-1 students at UTEP are eligible for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation, extendable to 36 months for STEM graduates in fields such as engineering, computer science, and geology, UTEP's core academic strengths, providing a meaningful post-study work pathway in the United States.
