About University of the Pacific

Private university in Stockton, California. Strong engineering, business, and health sciences.

University of the Pacific (UOP) is a private university founded in 1851, California's first chartered university. It operates across three campuses in Stockton (main), Sacramento, and San Francisco, and enrolls approximately 6,852 students across undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in 9 schools and colleges.

UOP is particularly well regarded for its professional health programs. The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco runs an accelerated three-year DDS, one of a handful in the country. The Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy offers a PharmD in as few as five years, and McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento is recognized for environmental and international law. Accelerated guaranteed-admission pathways allow undergraduates to move directly into these professional programs.

The main Stockton campus has a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1 and an average class size of 23, making it notably smaller and more accessible than large public research universities. U.S. News & World Report ranked it #136 among national universities and #3 for best value in California for 2025.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

For Nepali students

  • UOP offers a $15,000 International Student Merit Scholarship automatically considered at application, plus the highly competitive Powell Scholarship worth $43,000 per year (covering full tuition), which is open to international applicants with a December 1 deadline, meaningful cost relief for Nepali families paying out-of-pocket.
  • International students make up roughly 10% of the student body (over 680 students from 43+ countries), and the university's Asian student population is 30.7% of undergraduates, suggesting a diverse South and East Asian campus community that Nepali students typically find supportive.
  • UOP's pharmacy and health-sciences pathways are especially relevant for Nepali students pursuing healthcare careers: the guaranteed-interview accelerated PharmD and pre-dental tracks offer a structured route into licensed US professions, backed by OPT (up to 3 years for STEM-eligible programs) for post-graduation US work authorization.
  • Annual undergraduate tuition for 2026–27 is approximately $59,560 (two semesters at $29,780), placing it in the mid-high tier for US private universities, high sticker price, but the automatic international merit aid and strong professional-school placement (91% employed in field within six months for the Class of 2019) make the net cost and career ROI more competitive than the headline figure suggests.
