About Volunteer State Community College

Volunteer State Community College is a public community college in Gallatin, Tennessee. It is part of the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Volunteer State Community College (Vol State) is a public two-year institution founded in 1971 and located in Gallatin, Tennessee, approximately 27 miles northeast of Nashville. It operates as an open-enrollment college serving an 11-county region from Metro Nashville to the Cumberland Plateau, with additional learning centers in Cookeville, Livingston, and Springfield.

Vol State enrolls roughly 7,000 students per semester across six academic divisions: Business and Technology, Health Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts, Mathematics and Science, Nursing, and Social Science and Education, offering more than 115 areas of study. Nursing and allied health programs are among its most recognized strengths, with graduates transferring into nursing programs at institutions such as Belmont University, the University of Tennessee, and Middle Tennessee State University. The college confers Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees.

The main campus covers 100 acres with 16 buildings in Gallatin, a mid-sized city in Sumner County that is one of the fastest-growing counties in Tennessee. As a community college, Vol State is a practical and affordable entry point into the U.S. higher education system, with a 100 percent acceptance rate and an average student age of 22.

For Nepali students

  • Vol State's Tennessee Transfers Pathway allows F-1 students to complete an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree and then transfer to a four-year Tennessee university, making it a cost-effective two-year bridge to a bachelor's degree at a fraction of the cost of starting directly at a university.
  • Out-of-state tuition is approximately USD 14,000–17,000 per year, significantly lower than most four-year universities in the United States, and the college's median graduate debt of under USD 7,000 reflects its affordability as a community college.
  • Nepali students interested in health sciences or pre-nursing will find structured pathways and articulation agreements with regional four-year universities, reducing the uncertainty of the transfer process.
  • F-1 student status is accepted at Vol State with Fall and Spring admission; however, international students cannot access U.S. federal financial aid and must demonstrate full financial self-sufficiency, so this college suits students with personal or family funding rather than those seeking institutional scholarships.
