Volunteer State Community College (Vol State) is a public two-year institution founded in 1971 and located in Gallatin, Tennessee, approximately 27 miles northeast of Nashville. It operates as an open-enrollment college serving an 11-county region from Metro Nashville to the Cumberland Plateau, with additional learning centers in Cookeville, Livingston, and Springfield.
Vol State enrolls roughly 7,000 students per semester across six academic divisions: Business and Technology, Health Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts, Mathematics and Science, Nursing, and Social Science and Education, offering more than 115 areas of study. Nursing and allied health programs are among its most recognized strengths, with graduates transferring into nursing programs at institutions such as Belmont University, the University of Tennessee, and Middle Tennessee State University. The college confers Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees.
