About Kangan Institute

Kangan Institute is a TAFE provider in Melbourne, Australia.

Kangan Institute is a publicly funded Technical and Further Education (TAFE) provider in Melbourne, Victoria, established in 1986 as Broadmeadows College of TAFE and renamed in 1997 in honour of Myer Kangan, the architect of Australia's national TAFE system. It holds CRICOS registration (No. 01218G) and enrols approximately 28,000 students per year across six campuses: Broadmeadows, Docklands, Cremorne, Essendon, Sunbury, and Melton.

The institute is particularly well regarded for its Automotive Centre of Excellence at the Docklands campus, a purpose-built facility that trains more than 5,000 students annually in light vehicle mechanics, electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, marine mechanics, and related disciplines. Other strong vocational streams include community services (diploma-level aged care, disability support, and early childhood education), health and nursing, hospitality management, information technology, fashion design, and business. International students have access to English language (ELICOS) bridging courses before entering diploma or advanced diploma programs.

All six campuses are located within Melbourne's metropolitan area and are accessible by public transport. The Docklands campus sits adjacent to the Melbourne CBD waterfront and is served by multiple tram routes. Kangan Institute is not a university and holds no QS, Times Higher Education, or equivalent ranking; it operates strictly within Australia's vocational education and training (VET) sector under the national Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

For Nepali students

  • Kangan Institute's diploma and advanced diploma programs in community services, aged care, early childhood education, and automotive technology align directly with Australian occupations on the skills-in-demand lists, giving Nepali graduates a realistic pathway to the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) and longer-term permanent residency through skills recognition.
  • International tuition for diploma-level programs is approximately AUD 13,000–15,500 per year, making Kangan one of the more affordable study options in Melbourne compared with full university degrees; combined with the right to work up to 48 hours per fortnight on a student visa, the cost of living is more manageable than at most universities.
  • Kangan has formalised credit-transfer pathways with La Trobe University, Victoria University, and RMIT, allowing students who complete a diploma or advanced diploma to enter a partner bachelor's degree with advanced standing, a common route for Nepali students who begin with vocational qualifications and later transition to a degree.
  • The institute's large international student cohort and Melbourne location, where one of Australia's largest Nepali diaspora communities is based, means Nepali students are likely to find established community networks and culturally familiar support around the campuses in Broadmeadows and Docklands.
