About University of Newcastle
The University of Newcastle (UON), established in 1965 in NSW Australia, ranks #=227 globally (QS 2026) and is known for medicine, nursing, and engineering.
The University of Newcastle (UON) is an Australian public research university founded in 1965 in Newcastle, New South Wales. It enrolls approximately 36,000 students from over 100 countries across four campuses in Newcastle (Callaghan), Central Coast, Sydney CBD, and Singapore.
UON is particularly strong in health sciences and medicine, its School of Medicine and Public Health pioneered problem-based learning in Australia and has graduated more than 60 percent of the country's Indigenous doctors. Nursing is ranked #47 globally in QS Subject Rankings 2025, and the university has 14 subjects ranked in the QS Top 200. Engineering, architecture, business, and environmental science are also recognised program areas.
The main Callaghan campus sits on the outskirts of Newcastle city, roughly two hours north of Sydney. Newcastle is a mid-sized coastal city with a lower cost of living than Sydney or Melbourne, which meaningfully reduces the total study budget for international students. UON has held a consistent place in the QS top 250 globally and ranks 251–300 in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026.

For Nepali students
- UON's Nursing and Midwifery programs (QS #47 globally) and its medical sciences degrees are directly relevant to Nepali students seeking healthcare careers with strong graduate employment prospects and pathways to Australian registration.
- All commencing international students are automatically considered for the International Excellence Scholarship, worth 20 percent of annual tuition with no separate application required, a meaningful reduction on fees that typically range from AUD 36,000 to AUD 53,000 per year for undergraduates.
- Australia's Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) allows graduates to work in Australia for two to four years after completing their degree, giving Nepali students a realistic pathway to recoup education costs and gain international work experience before returning home or applying for permanent residency.
- Newcastle's cost of living is substantially lower than Sydney or Melbourne, and UON's mid-tier tuition range makes it one of the more affordable Group of Eight-adjacent options in Australia for Nepali students on a moderate budget.
