About Peking University

Peking University, founded in 1898, is China's top-ranked research university in Beijing, consistently ranked #13–14 globally by QS and THE.

Peking University (PKU) was founded in 1898 as the Imperial University of Peking, making it China's first national comprehensive university. Located in Haidian District, Beijing, the campus sits on former imperial garden grounds and covers over 270 hectares. It operates 30 colleges and 12 departments offering 93 undergraduate specialties and over 170 doctoral programs.

PKU is particularly strong in humanities, law, life sciences, physical sciences, computer science, and economics. Its medical school (Peking University Health Science Center) is among China's most prestigious. The university also runs international flagship programs through institutions such as the HSBC Business School (Shenzhen) and the Yenching Academy, a graduate program in China Studies taught in English.

In global rankings, PKU is placed #13 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and #13 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, the highest of any Chinese university in both tables. With roughly 35,600 students and around 15% international enrollment, it is a major hub for international academic exchange in Asia.

For Nepali students

  • Nepal and China have an active bilateral agreement under the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) program, and Peking University is one of the designated institutions. Nepali students can apply through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu for fully funded scholarships that cover tuition, accommodation, stipend, and medical insurance.
  • Undergraduate tuition for self-funded international students is approximately RMB 26,000–30,000 per year (roughly USD 3,600–4,200), which is substantially lower than comparable-ranked universities in the US, UK, or Australia, making PKU a cost-competitive choice at the elite tier.
  • PKU's strong programs in medicine, law, computer science, and economics align well with high-demand fields for Nepali graduates. Several graduate programs are taught in English, and the university hosts an active international student community with students from South Asia.
  • China does not have a formal post-study work visa pathway equivalent to those in Canada or Australia, so students planning to work in China after graduation should account for the need to secure an employer-sponsored work permit. However, a PKU degree carries strong recognition across Asia and in international organizations.
