About University of Science and Technology of China

USTC is a C9 League research university in Hefei, China, ranked #51 globally (THE 2026) and #1 in China by Nature Index 2025.

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a public research university founded in 1958 in Beijing and relocated to Hefei, Anhui Province in 1970. It is a member of China's C9 League, the country's nine most elite universities, and operates under the direct supervision of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Total enrollment stands at approximately 22,955 students.

USTC's academic identity is built around science, engineering, and technology. Five of its disciplines, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, and Computer Science, rank in the top 0.1% of ESI International Rankings, and its faculty includes over 800 full professors and 55 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering. The university houses 15 national-level research institutions and reported 1.5 billion yuan in annual research funding.

The main campus is located in Baohe District, Hefei, a mid-sized city in eastern China. USTC ranks #1 among Chinese mainland universities on the 2025 Nature Index and 6th in China on the Times Higher Education 2026 rankings (#51 globally), making it one of the highest-ranked institutions in the country by research output relative to its size.

For Nepali students

  • USTC is one of the most research-intensive universities in Asia and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in physics, computer science, materials science, and engineering, fields where Chinese universities have strong global standing and where Nepali students in STEM can compete for admission through the China Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship, which covers full tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend of RMB 2,500–3,500.
  • The USTC Fellowship for undergraduate students offers two funding tiers: Level A covers tuition waiver, medical insurance, accommodation subsidy, and a RMB 2,500/month stipend, making the effective out-of-pocket cost very low for admitted Nepali scholars. Without a scholarship, annual tuition for international undergraduates is approximately RMB 26,000 (~USD 3,600), which is significantly lower than comparable-ranked universities in the UK, Australia, or USA.
  • Nepali applicants can apply for the CSC scholarship either through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu (bilateral pathway) or directly via USTC's university program channel, with application windows typically open December through April. Post-study work rights in China for international graduates are limited and require separate work visa sponsorship, so USTC is best suited for students targeting research careers, PhD programs, or employment back in Nepal or in Chinese industry.
