About Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is a top-30 global research university founded in 1896, based in Shanghai, China, ranked #47 QS 2026.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was founded in 1896 and is one of China's oldest and most selective universities. With over 41,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, it operates primarily from its main campus at 800 Dongchuan Road in Minhang District, Shanghai, with postgraduate students outnumbering undergraduates.
SJTU is particularly strong in engineering, computer science, business, and the physical sciences. In the 2026 Times Higher Education subject rankings, it placed 24th globally in engineering, 25th in computer science, and 28th in business and economics. The university has 21 disciplines ranked in the global top 1% by Clarivate, and it hosts the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF), one of Asia's leading finance schools.
SJTU ranks #47 in the QS World University Rankings 2026, #40 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, and #30 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2025, the ranking system that SJTU itself originally developed. For Nepali students
- Nepal and China have strong bilateral ties, and Nepali students are eligible to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, which covers full tuition, accommodation, and provides a monthly stipend of CNY 2,500 for master's students and CNY 3,500 for doctoral students, making SJTU accessible at near-zero cost for competitive applicants.
- SJTU's English-medium undergraduate programs (SJTU Global College) charge CNY 120,000 per year (~USD 16,500), but the university's own tiered scholarships, First-Class covers full tuition plus a CNY 2,500/month living allowance, are awarded purely on academic and interview performance, giving strong Nepali applicants a realistic path to funding.
- For Nepali students targeting engineering, computer science, or finance careers, SJTU's global subject rankings (top 25 in engineering and CS) and its deep industry links in Shanghai provide access to a major innovation and finance hub in Asia.
- China's post-study work options are limited compared to countries like Australia or Canada, graduates typically need a sponsored work visa, so SJTU is best suited for Nepali students aiming for further research, or those planning to return to Nepal or the region with an internationally recognized credential.
