About Nanjing Medical University

Nanjing Medical University (est. 1934) is a specialist public medical university in Nanjing, China, with Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology ranked in the global top 0.1% by ESI.

Nanjing Medical University (NMU) is a public specialist university established in 1934 in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. It operates under the Jiangsu Provincial Government and enrolls over 18,000 students across undergraduate, postgraduate, and postdoctoral levels, including more than 1,000 international students from over 40 countries. The university runs 19 schools and colleges, including Kangda College, and maintains 15 directly affiliated hospitals plus more than 50 teaching hospitals across Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Shandong.

NMU's academic strength is concentrated in medical and health sciences. Its Public Health and Preventive Medicine discipline received an A+ rating in China's national discipline evaluation, and Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology rank in the global top 0.1% by Elsevier's Essential Science Indicators (ESI) citation benchmarks, nine disciplines overall rank in the ESI top 1%. The university has offered its Clinical Medicine (MBBS) program in English to international students since 2005, and holds an 8-year clinical medicine accreditation, the longest validity period awarded under China's national system.

NMU's main campus is located in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, a major academic and economic hub on the Yangtze River. The city hosts numerous universities and research institutes, providing a scientifically active environment. The university is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), and accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), making its MBBS degree eligible for licensing examination pathways in multiple countries.

For Nepali students

  • Nepal is explicitly listed among the source countries of NMU's international student body, meaning a Nepali community already exists on campus, which eases social integration for new arrivals. Graduates from NMU have been accepted to sit licensing examinations in South Asian countries, and the Medical Education Commission (MEC) of Nepal allocates Chinese Government Scholarship seats for MBBS, NMU is an eligible destination under this scheme.
  • The annual MBBS tuition of approximately CNY 34,000 (roughly USD 4,700) is substantially lower than comparable English-medium medical programs in the UK, Australia, or the USA, making it accessible for Nepali families seeking an internationally recognized medical degree at manageable cost. Total first-year costs including on-campus accommodation are estimated around CNY 40,000 (USD 5,500).
  • Multiple layered scholarships are open to international students at NMU: the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS, fully funded with monthly stipend), the Jiangsu Jasmine Government Scholarship (up to CNY 50,000 full or CNY 30,000 partial), and the Nanjing Government Scholarship (CNY 10,000–20,000). Nepali students qualifying through MECEE-BL can apply for CGS-allocated seats directly via Nepal's MEC, bypassing the open market application process.
  • Post-graduation, NMU's WHO listing and WFME accreditation allow graduates to appear for the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) licensing examination, which is the standard route for Nepali MBBS graduates returning from China. China does not generally extend post-study work rights for medical graduates to practice clinical medicine domestically, so most Nepali graduates plan to return and sit the NMC screening test.
