About Nanjing University

Nanjing University is a leading Chinese research university ranked =62nd globally by THE 2026, with particular strength in physical sciences and engineering.

Nanjing University (NJU) is a public research university established in 1902 in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province. It is one of China's C9 League universities, a group analogous to the Ivy League, and is directly administered by the Ministry of Education. The university has approximately 34,000 students across two main campuses: Gulou (historic city centre) and Xianlin (suburban).

NJU has particular academic depth in physical sciences, earth sciences, computer science, and engineering. Its Department of Astronomy is one of the oldest and most reputed in China, and the university is consistently ranked among China's top five institutions in research output. It offers English-taught programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, particularly in sciences and engineering.

Nanjing ranks among China's most liveable mid-tier cities, with a lower cost of living than Shanghai or Beijing. The university's Xianlin campus is a self-contained modern campus with on-campus dormitories available to international students at subsidised rates.

For Nepali students

  • Tuition fees for international undergraduates range from approximately CNY 21,000 to 24,000 per year (roughly USD 2,900–3,400), making NJU significantly more affordable than comparable-ranked universities in the UK, USA, or Australia.
  • Nepali students are eligible to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) administered through Nanjing University, a fully funded award covering tuition, accommodation, and a monthly living stipend for bachelor's, master's, and PhD programs.
  • NJU's strength in physical sciences, engineering, computer science, and earth sciences aligns well with the fields most sought by Nepali students pursuing postgraduate research or PhD study in Asia.
  • China does not have a formal post-study work visa pathway equivalent to those in Australia or the UK, so students planning to work abroad long-term after graduation should factor this in; however, the low cost and scholarship availability make NJU a strong option for those seeking a research-focused degree at a globally ranked institution.
