About Shandong University

Shandong University, founded in 1901 in Jinan, China, is a comprehensive research university ranked 339th globally by QS (2026).

Shandong University (SDU) is a comprehensive public research university founded in 1901 in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province in eastern China. It is one of China's oldest national universities and operates 31 colleges and schools spanning 10 academic disciplines, philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, natural sciences, engineering, management, education, and medicine. The university merged with Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology in 2000, significantly expanding its scope.

SDU's strongest subject areas include engineering and physical sciences, where it ranks in the 176–200 range globally according to the Times Higher Education 2026 subject rankings. Business and economics, computer science, law, and medical sciences also place in the 201–250 range internationally. The university has over 200 partner institutions worldwide and has enrolled students from more than 60 countries since 1980.

The main campus is located in Jinan, with additional campuses in Qingdao and Weihai. Jinan is a provincial capital city of about 9 million people with direct rail connections to Beijing (roughly 90 minutes by high-speed rail). SDU is designated a Double First-Class university under China's national excellence initiative, placing it among the country's leading institutions.

For Nepali students

  • Shandong University participates in the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) and its Silk Road Scholarship programme, both of which are open to Nepali nationals and cover full tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend of CNY 2,500 for undergraduates, making it one of the most affordable routes to a degree-level education in China with no IELTS or TOEFL required for the scholarship application.
  • Tuition fees for self-funded international undergraduates range from roughly CNY 18,000 to CNY 26,000 per year (~USD 2,500–3,600) for humanities, science, and engineering programmes, which is substantially lower than equivalent programmes in Australia, the UK, or the USA and keeps total annual costs manageable even without a scholarship.
  • SDU's engineering, computer science, and medical programmes are internationally ranked and align well with fields where Nepali students show strong demand; the MBBS programme in particular attracts South Asian students and is taught with clinical exposure within affiliated hospitals in Jinan.
  • China does not offer a post-study work visa pathway equivalent to those in Australia or the UK, so students should plan for return or onward migration after graduation; however, the low cost of study and the fully funded scholarship options make SDU a strong value proposition for Nepali students seeking internationally recognised credentials at minimal debt.
