About Southeast University
Southeast University is a Chinese Ministry of Education-affiliated research university in Nanjing, founded in 1902, ranked 251–300 globally by Times Higher Education.
Southeast University (SEU) is a public research university in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, founded in 1902 as Sanjiang Normal College. It is administered directly under China's Ministry of Education and holds dual membership in the prestigious Project 985 and Project 211 national university development programmes, placing it among China's leading institutions.
SEU's strongest disciplines are engineering, architecture, electronic information technology, civil engineering, and biomedical engineering. Its School of Architecture, established in 1927, is the oldest architecture school in China. Seven of the university's disciplines, including engineering science and materials science, rank in the top 1% of the global ESI (Essential Science Indicators) database, with engineering placing in the top 1‰ worldwide. The university offers 97 undergraduate majors across 36 faculties.
The university operates across two main campuses in Nanjing: the historic Sipailou Campus near the city centre and the newer Jiulonghu Campus. Nanjing is one of China's major educational cities, home to dozens of universities, with strong transport links to Shanghai (about one hour by high-speed rail). SEU enrolls approximately 40,000 students in total, of whom roughly 4–6% are international students.
World University Rankings
For Nepali students
- SEU is one of the most affordable top-100 global universities for Nepali students: undergraduate tuition for most programmes runs 16,000–27,000 RMB per year (approximately USD 2,200–3,700), making the total cost of attendance significantly lower than comparable ranked universities in the UK, Australia, or Canada.
- The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), open to Nepali nationals, is available at SEU under agency code 10286; it covers tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend for eligible master's and PhD students, making postgraduate study potentially cost-free.
- SEU's engineering, architecture, civil engineering, and electronic information programmes are among the strongest in China, disciplines with high graduate demand in Nepal's infrastructure and telecoms sectors, offering practical skills transferable back home.
- China does not offer a formal post-study work visa pathway comparable to those in the UK or Australia, so Nepali students should plan their career strategy before enrolling; however, the low tuition cost and CSC scholarship availability make SEU a strong value choice for those seeking a globally ranked degree at minimal expense.
