Wuhan University (WHU) is a comprehensive research university founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, the then-governor of Hubei Province, making it one of China's oldest institutions of higher learning. Administered by the Ministry of Education, it operates 37 schools and departments offering more than 120 undergraduate and over 300 graduate programs. It ranks =122nd globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 and #186 in QS World University Rankings 2026.

WHU is globally recognised for its State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS), which ranked first in the world in the remote sensing discipline in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The university also has strong faculties in law, economics, medicine, and the humanities. It hosts approximately 49,000 students and around 3,900 faculty members, with international students representing about 6 percent of total enrollment.

For Nepali students

  • Nepali students can apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) at Wuhan University, which covers full tuition, accommodation, and provides a monthly stipend of RMB 2,500–3,500, substantially reducing the cost of studying in China.
  • Undergraduate tuition for international students ranges from RMB 20,000 to 40,000 per year (approximately USD 2,700–5,500), making WHU one of the more affordable globally-ranked universities compared to anglophone destinations.
  • WHU's world-leading programs in geomatics, remote sensing, and civil/water engineering align with infrastructure and development sectors where Nepal has growing demand for skilled graduates.
  • China does not offer a post-study work visa pathway equivalent to those in Australia or the UK, so students should plan to return home or seek employment in China directly after graduation; however, the low cost of study and CSC scholarship availability make WHU a financially accessible option for Nepali families.
