About Xi'an Jiaotong University
Xi'an Jiaotong University is a C9 League research university in Xi'an, China, founded in 1896, ranked 92nd globally by ARWU 2025.
Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is a comprehensive research university founded in Shanghai in 1896 and relocated to Xi'an in 1956 under a State Council directive. It is one of only nine universities in China's elite C9 League, the country's equivalent of the Ivy League, and the only C9 member located in Western China. The university operates 17 schools offering 74 undergraduate, 199 master's, and 114 doctoral programs across science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, law, and the humanities.
XJTU's strongest disciplines are engineering and technology, energy science, biomedical engineering, and management. The university runs eight affiliated teaching hospitals, two of which rank among China's top 100 medical institutions, making its clinical medicine programs particularly well-regarded. Its research output spans high-profile journals including Cell, Science Advances, and Nature Communications, and it is a founding member of the University Alliance of the Silk Road.
The main campus is located in Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province and the historic eastern terminus of the ancient Silk Road. Xi'an is a tier-1 city in western China with a lower cost of living than Beijing or Shanghai. Total enrollment stands at approximately 60,000 students, of whom around 3,700 are international students from more than 100 countries.
World University Rankings
For Nepali students
- XJTU holds the ARWU 2025 rank of 92 globally and a THE 2026 rank of 201–250, giving Nepali graduates a degree from one of China's most internationally recognised universities at a fraction of the cost of comparable institutions in the West, English-taught undergraduate tuition starts at approximately ¥26,000 CNY (~USD 3,600) per year for non-clinical programs.
- The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), open to Nepali citizens, covers full tuition, university accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance, and a monthly living stipend of ¥2,500 CNY for undergraduates, making a fully-funded degree a realistic option for high-achieving applicants.
- XJTU's engineering, computer science, and biomedical programs are particularly strong draws; Nepali students targeting careers in infrastructure, energy, or healthcare can use XJTU's industry connections across Belt and Road Initiative countries, which include Nepal.
- China's post-study visa pathways allow international graduates to apply for work permits; however, most Nepali XJTU alumni return home or move to third countries, so prospective students should research current Chinese work-permit rules carefully before making decisions based on post-study work rights in China.
