About Zhejiang University

Zhejiang University is a leading Chinese public research university in Hangzhou, ranked #47 in the QS World Rankings 2026 and #39 in THE 2026.

Zhejiang University (ZJU), founded in 1897 and located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, is one of China's oldest and most selective public research universities. It consistently ranks among the top three universities on the Chinese mainland and holds 39 disciplines graded A in China's national discipline assessment, the most of any institution.

ZJU's academic strengths span engineering, computer science, agriculture, life sciences, and medicine. The university hosts more than a dozen national key laboratories, including the State Key Lab of Rice Biology and the State Key Lab of Clean Energy Utilization, and 18 of its disciplines are included in China's prestigious 'Double First-Class' Initiative. International students can pursue English-taught bachelor's and master's degrees across engineering, business, medicine, and China studies.

The main campus is situated in Hangzhou, a city of roughly 12 million people about 180 km southwest of Shanghai, known for its technology industry, Alibaba is headquartered there, and its UNESCO-listed West Lake. The university's International Campus is located in the Haining district of Zhejiang, offering a more internationally oriented environment for some undergraduate programs.

For Nepali students

  • Tuition fees for international undergraduates at ZJU are among the lowest for a top-50 global university, ranging from CNY 19,800 to CNY 29,800 per year (roughly USD 2,700–4,100 at current exchange rates) depending on the field, a significant cost advantage over comparable universities in the UK, Australia, or the USA.
  • Nepali students are eligible for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) administered through the China Scholarship Council, which can cover full tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend; Nepal's government also nominates candidates through bilateral agreements under the Belt and Road Initiative.
  • ZJU's particular strength in agricultural sciences, engineering, and biomedical research aligns well with fields that Nepali students commonly pursue, and English-medium programs exist at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, reducing the language barrier for initial entry.
  • China does not offer a post-study work visa equivalent to those in Australia or Canada, so graduates typically need to secure a work permit if they wish to remain; however, ZJU's strong industry links with Hangzhou's technology sector and proximity to companies like Alibaba and NetEase provide internship and employment pathways during study.
