IELTS band score calculator
Enter four skill bands, or raw scores out of 40, and see the overall band you would be reported. It also shows which single skill is the cheapest one to lift if you are half a band short of your target.
Overall band score
6.5
Your four bands average 6.25. IELTS rounds a mean ending in .25 up to the next half band and a mean ending in .75 up to the next whole band, so 6.25 is reported as 6.5, not 6.
The cheapest way to reach 7 overall
Raising one skill on its own is enough, and these are ordered by how little you would have to gain. Your weakest skill is reading, which is usually where the gain is easiest, though not always where it is fastest.

One thing this number does not tell you
Plenty of universities set a minimum in each band as well as an overall minimum, and nursing regulators almost always do. Australia's AHPRA wants 7.0 in every band with no exceptions, and the UK's NMC wants 7.0 overall with 6.5 permitted in writing. An overall 7.0 built from 8.0, 7.5, 6.0 and 6.5 meets neither. Check the per-band requirement on your offer letter, not just the headline figure.
Why the rounding matters more than people think
IELTS reports the overall band in whole and half steps, so the mean of your four scores has to be rounded. The rule is not the one most people assume. A mean ending in .25 goes up to the next half band, and a mean ending in .75 goes up to the next whole band.
The practical effect is that 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.0 is an overall 6.5, not a 6.0. Every year candidates with exactly that combination assume they have missed a 6.5 requirement and either book another test or withdraw an application they would have been accepted on. It is worth working out before you spend another test fee.
| Four skill bands | Mean | Reported | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.5, 6.5, 6.0, 6.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 | The case that catches everybody. A mean of 6.25 rounds up, not down, so this is a 6.5 overall and it meets a 6.5 requirement. |
| 7.0, 6.5, 6.0, 6.0 | 6.375 | 6.5 | Anything from 6.25 up to but not including 6.75 reports as 6.5. |
| 7.5, 7.0, 6.5, 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | An exact half band needs no rounding at all. |
| 7.5, 7.5, 7.0, 7.0 | 7.25 | 7.5 | The same quarter-band rule, one band higher. |
| 8.0, 7.5, 7.5, 7.5 | 7.625 | 7.5 | Just short. A mean of 7.75 would have rounded to 8.0, so a single half band in any skill would change the reported result. |
The overall band is not always the requirement
Most institutions publish an overall minimum and a per-band minimum together. The overall one gets quoted and the per-band one is what fails applications.
Most master's programmes in the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0
The per-band floor fails more applicants than the overall figure does.
Many undergraduate and pathway programmes6.0 overall, sometimes 5.5 in individual bands
Foundation programmes will often take 5.5 overall.
Nursing registration in Australia, through AHPRA7.0 in every one of the four bands
No exceptions and no averaging. This single rule stops more qualified Nepali nurses than any clinical assessment.
Nursing registration in the UK, through the NMC7.0 overall, with 6.5 permitted in writing
The writing concession is the only one the NMC allows.
Australian student visa, Subclass 500Commonly 5.5 overall
Visa minimums sit below university minimums, so the university requirement is almost always the one that binds.
Questions about IELTS scoring
- How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
- Add the four skill bands, divide by four, then round. A mean ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and a mean ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Everything else rounds to the nearest half band in the normal way.
- Is 6.25 rounded up or down in IELTS?
- Up. A mean of 6.25 is reported as an overall 6.5, which means scores of 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.0 meet a university requirement of 6.5 overall.
- Can I get an overall 7 with a 6 in one skill?
- Arithmetically yes, for example 7.5, 7.5, 7.5 and 6.0 gives a mean of 7.125 and an overall 7.0. Whether it is accepted is a different question, because many universities set a per-band minimum alongside the overall figure. Check the per-band requirement on your offer letter.
- What raw score do I need out of 40 for band 7?
- Around 30 in Listening and around 30 in Academic Reading. General Training Reading is much stricter and needs roughly 34 for the same band. All of these move by a mark or two between test versions.
- Are half bands given in every skill?
- Yes. Listening and Reading produce half bands through the raw score conversion, and Writing and Speaking are marked in half bands directly by the examiner.
Rounding rules reviewed 2026-07-28. Raw score conversions are indicative averages: IELTS equates each live version of the test separately, so the exact raw score for a band moves between papers.
