Preparing in Nepal

IELTS preparation in Nepal, without wasting money on it

A test fee of NPR 36,000 plus a course can come to more than a month's salary for a lot of candidates. This page is about spending that only where it changes your result, and about the handful of mistakes that reliably send people back for a second attempt.

What it all costs

Test fees verified 2026-07-28 against IDP Nepal. Course and tuition figures are market ranges from Kathmandu and the larger regional cities, so treat them as a guide and ask locally.

Do you actually need a class?

We do not sell IELTS classes, so there is nothing in this for us either way. The honest answer is that it depends on which of these lists you recognise yourself in.

A class is probably worth it if

  • You have never sat a standardised English test and do not know the question formats at all.
  • You need 7.0 in every band for nursing registration, where the margin for error is nil.
  • You have already sat IELTS once and scored below your target on Writing, where self-marking is genuinely hard.
  • You know from experience that you will not study without a fixed timetable and somebody expecting you.

Think again if

  • You already study or work in English and read regularly. You are likely to be closer to your target than you think, and a diagnostic paper will tell you in two hours.
  • You are being sold a package that bundles IELTS classes with visa or admission services. Those are separate purchases and bundling them makes it impossible to judge either on price.
  • The class has thirty students. Nobody gets Speaking feedback in a room of thirty, and Speaking feedback is most of what a class can offer that a book cannot.
  • You are three weeks from your test date and have not yet sat a full paper. Sit the paper first, then decide what you actually need.

Whichever way you go, do the same first step: sit a full timed paper before you spend anything. Two hours will tell you what a month of guessing will not, and it costs nothing.

Six things that matter specifically here

Generic IELTS advice is written for candidates with a laptop, a study partner and a test centre down the road. Some of it does not survive contact with how people actually prepare in Nepal.

Prepare on the device you will not be tested on

Almost everybody in Nepal prepares on a phone and everybody now sits the test on a desktop computer. Reading a passage on a phone teaches you to scroll a short column; the real test gives you a wide screen with the passage on one side and questions on the other. Do at least three full Reading papers on a laptop or a desktop before test day, even if you have to borrow one for an afternoon.

Spelling is where Nepali candidates lose Listening marks

The English is rarely the problem. The marks go on Wednesday, February, accommodation, restaurant and receipt, and on writing a name that was spelled out letter by letter. A short list of the forty words that actually recur in Section 1 is worth more than a month of vocabulary apps.

Book the computer test, and book it early

Computer sittings run several times a week in Kathmandu and results come back in usually three to five days, and often faster. Paper sittings are being withdrawn, are slower, and are harder to find. If your university deadline is in eight weeks, book now and prepare against a real date rather than waiting until you feel ready.

Leave room for a retake in your timeline

Plan your test date at least ten weeks before your application deadline. That leaves time for a full retake, or a One Skill Retake within the 60-day window, without putting the offer at risk. Candidates who book three weeks before a deadline and miss by half a band have no move left.

Speaking practice does not need a partner

The most common thing said in Nepal about Speaking is that there is nobody to practise with. There does not need to be. Record two minutes on a cue card on your phone, listen back, and note the repetition and the sentences that trail off. That is closer to what the examiner hears than a conversation with a friend who already understands you.

Be careful what you are promised

Nobody can guarantee a band score, and any consultancy that does is either misunderstanding the test or misleading you. Nobody can arrange a score either. Every year candidates in Nepal pay for that and lose both the money and, where a fraudulent result is detected, the right to sit the test.

Where you can sit the test

IDP operates venues in the cities below, and the British Council runs IELTS from Lainchaur in Kathmandu together with partner venues covering much of the same list. Kathmandu has by far the most frequent computer sittings, so candidates outside the valley often travel for a date rather than wait for a local one.

  • Biratnagar
  • Butwal
  • Itahari
  • Birtamod

Paper-based IELTS is being withdrawn during 2026

IELTS is moving to computer delivery worldwide. In most markets the last paper-based test date was 27 June 2026, though the exact timing varies by market and IDP Nepal was still listing paper sittings after that date. Results from a paper test you have already taken remain valid for two years, so nothing you hold is affected. If you are booking now, book the computer test: it has more sittings, faster results, and it is the only version that offers One Skill Retake.

Questions from Nepali candidates

How much does IELTS preparation cost in Nepal?
The test itself is NPR 36,000 for the computer version. A preparation course at an institute typically runs between NPR 8,000 and NPR 20,000, and private tuition is roughly NPR 800 to 2,000 an hour. Practice material is free here and one official Cambridge volume costs under NPR 1,500.
Can I prepare for IELTS in Nepal without joining a class?
Yes, and many people should. If you already study or work in English, sit a full timed paper first. Self study with free practice papers and one official book is often enough. A class earns its money mainly through Writing and Speaking feedback, which is the part that is hardest to get on your own.
How long does IELTS preparation take?
Four to six weeks is realistic for somebody already comfortable reading in English. Three to four months is more honest for somebody starting from a weaker base, or targeting 7.0 in every band for nursing registration. Sitting one full paper before you start is the only way to know which you are.
Which is better in Nepal, the British Council or IDP?
Neither is better. They run the same test, charge the same fee and their results are equally accepted. Choose on which one has a test date and a centre that suit you.
Where can I take IELTS in Nepal?
IDP runs test venues in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Butwal, Itahari and several other cities, and the British Council operates from Lainchaur in Kathmandu plus partner venues covering much of the same list. Kathmandu has the most frequent computer sittings by a wide margin.
Is IELTS still on paper in Nepal?
Paper delivery is being withdrawn worldwide during 2026. Some paper sittings were still listed in Nepal after the general cut-off, but the computer test is the one to book: more dates, faster results, and it is the only version offering One Skill Retake.
